And what great timing. It’s becoming clear to me that most organizations have put to rest the “newness” notion of social media. It involves people, it involves tools, and it’s a two-way street. Got it.

What’s more important as I explained to a business partner recently, is seeking out projects and work that make a difference. I don’t want to help companies that are just consumed with moving more widgets.

Let’s talk about what you’re doing to change things or for my community and for my family. Haque described that a while back as scaling ambition rather than things. And I’m not trying to be a moral highbrow, it’s just time social strategy started to impact things besides making big companies bigger. I’ll let Umair cap it off below.

It fits most organizations to a T — from Wall Street to Detroit to Big Pharma to Big Food to Big Energy. Our research suggests that 95% of organizations are unable to offer socially useful stuff that creates meaningful value for people, communities, and tomorrow’s generations.

Yet, most "social media" strategies have one or more of three goals: to "push product," "build buzz," or "engage consumers." None of these lives up to the Internet’s promise of meaning. They’re just slightly cleverer ways to sell more of the same old junk. But the great challenge of the 21st century is making stuff radically better in the first place — stuff that creates what I’ve been calling thicker value.

Organizations don’t need "social media" strategies. They need social strategies: strategies that turn antisocial behavior on its head to maximize meaning. The right end of social tools is to help organizations stop being antisocial. In fact, it’s the key to advantage in the 2010s and beyond.

Too many companies have invested too much in SharePoint to move away so quickly. Box will be bought and sold or become three different things before SharePoint subsides in the enterprise.

You see, people don’t install portals anymore, they install SharePoint. And those SharePoint implementations – good or bad – are the gateway to the rest of the business apps and workflows that users access to get work done.

I do think Box.net can continue to make inroads however, with mobile obviously being one of the catalysts. Mashable’s Christina Warren describes its mobile improvements.

"Box.net 2.0 adds in file preview (similar to the enhancements rolled out last month for the full site), the ability to comment and view comments on files or folders, the ability to share files or folders straight from the app, and the ability to view updates to an account or project."

That’s pretty big. I haven’t seen a mobile-oriented collaboration app that provides that level of user-generated content on the device, though there’s probably something. That’s just the kind of capability that makes early adopters prone to introducing things like Box.net behind the corporate firewall. And there’s every possibility they’ll crack an enterprise nut or two along the way.

This deal, coupled with a redesigned MySpace Music homepage, seems to signal the social network’s heavy focus on entertainment is taking shape. If MySpace can continue to unify its properties and improve brand recognition (what it is), the social network land grab gets a heck of a lot more interesting.

TechCrunch’s Jason Kincaid describes the FWix model below.
——————————————————————————-
“The basic idea behind Fwix is fairly simple: it aggregates news articles and blog posts that are relevant to a certain region (the site now features support for over 80 cities in the United States and Canada). To do this, the Fwix team selects news sources and blogs that it thinks are related to each city, and also uses automated algorithms to determine when other content might also be relevant.”
————————————————-
You can’t turn around without seeing a company targeting the aggregation and content markets. With social networks and media converging, the ability to filter and aggregate information isn’t just important to publishers, it’s important for every company. The ability to cut through mountains of information is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage.

Never has the “get the right info to the right person at the right time” saying rang more true. That expertise will ultimately be one of your company’s biggest assets. Hell, in some organizations is it’s the only real differentiator. So pay attention to the the way news and information is being used — and pay special attention to the companies that are innovating in the space. They could be your next competitor..or partner.

Of course to move innovation forward, companies need to have their internal practices polished and primed for collaboration inside and outside the firewall.

I’ve spoken to a number of clients recently that head innovation practices and the obvious push is around better ways of sharing information. In other words, what’s the fastest way to facilitate innovation discussions. And beyond that, how do I take the byproducts of those conversations and turn them into actionable intelligence. It’s that intelligence that ultimately moves the needle.
