Seaweed Cars Are As Close To Green As We’ve Seen

Yes it’s only a concept car, but apparently Toyota has built an automobile from a  kelp-based bioplastic.  According to this FastCompany post, the car’s engine mixes 500cc gasoline power with lithium-ion batteries for electric power.

Toyota’s project manager Tetsuya Kaida says the existing 1/X uses “lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced plastic throughout the body and frame for its superior collision safety.” Unfortunately, that safety feature is still built using oil-based plastics. We’re getting there.
